Why I'm Doing The CrossFit Open

The 2015 CrossFit Games Open will announce the first workout ("15.1") this Thursday, February 26th, and we'll be doing the WOD the following Saturday, February 28th, as a gym (just as we will every Saturday for the five weeks during The Open).  If you're a member at Arena Ready and/or follow this blog you've likely heard quite a bit about the Open, and why we think many of you should participate.

Lindsay "Sparkle" Stok-Moore recently offered her thoughts on the subject in the AR Facebook group:
My first Open was in 2012. That Open, I snatched 75lbs seven times and completed 10 chest-to-bar pull-ups. I was so proud of myself! Let 2015 be your first year and join the AR party! 10 days (now 6 days) until the Open!!!

Coach Molly commented with her perspective on competition, even before The Open was a thing:
Shortly after I started CF in 2009 I ended up at the CF Games on our gym team (you just signed up to compete as a team then, since there was no Open yet). I nearly caused us to DNF the first event because I kept missing the 10ft wall ball target. I could not hit it and I had to do 30 reps. I watched in awe as women overhead squatted 165lbs for 3 (I barely hit 95lbs and my last rep's depth was questionable), etc, etc. I've been competing ever since. Every year I improve something somehow, and I'm so inspired by what I see other people accomplishing. It's a wonderful event.

To offer another perspective, "Mini Rex" Lisa IG recently posted her thoughts on her personal blog, Stilettos to Snatches, in an article titled "Why I'm Doing The CrossFit Open"(click here to read the full article).  Here's a great excerpt:

In doing all the workouts in last year’s Open, I had moments where I cried from being so happy, and I felt an incredible sense of belonging to a greater cause.  Make no mistake, I was never in any position to qualify for the NorCal Regional at any point, but it was incredible to watch some of my fellow teammates gun for better times, more reps, do things they had never done before, or smile with the sense of accomplishment. Which brings me to why I’m doing the CrossFit Open in 2015.  I want to look back a year from now and think, “Wow, look at all that you’ve done in just one year.” I want to cheer for my old and new friends, and I want to be there when someone does their first muscle up or complete a round of heavy cleans.
